GTE WIRELESS SELECTS SIEMENS / NEWBRIDGE ATM SOLUTION FOR DIGITAL WIRELESS SERVICES NETWORK
Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch speeds call connections for GTE's wireless subscribers
HERNDON, Virginia, April 14 /CNW/ - Newbridge Networks announced today that GTE Wireless, one of the top five wireless companies in the world, has selected the MainStreetXpress(TM) 36170 Multiservices Switch for its digital Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network in the San Francisco Bay area. The switch provides asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)-based high bandwidth links between Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) that improve call handling efficiency and provide better system performance for GTE's wireless subscribers. ``With the MainStreetXpress 36170 ATM switch, our CDMA network can support seamless inter-MSC mobility, which means higher quality call connections for our customers,'' said Randy Crouse, Assistant Vice President,Technology for GTE Wireless. ``Since the switch is highly scalable and can handle multiple traffic types, it will help us realize further network efficiencies as our subscriber base continues to grow.'' GTE Wireless introduced its digital CDMA wireless services network in November of last year in Austin, Texas, in December in San Jose, California, and in January in San Francisco. This has provided customers significant service improvements over analog wireless services. The new network offers superior audio quality with static-free calls and fewer dropped and blocked calls. In March, the company announced new digital messaging services as part of its wireless service offerings, providing options for paging and voice mail services, as well as the ability to receive and forward faxes. By utilizing a high capacity MainStreetXpress ATM backbone for trunking CDMA traffic between MSCs, GTE Wireless can provision resilient, high-speed links while dynamically segregating traffic types based on the required Quality of Service (QoS) metrics. Deployment of a high-speed ATM backbone also optimizes rerouting capabilities, ensuring high network availability. This gives service providers the flexibility to support the requirements of emerging integrated digital cellular voice and data services. The net gain is increased resiliency, performance, and call handling efficiency on a future proof backbone architecture. ``GTE Wireless is laying the foundation for the next generation of wireless communications, and Newbridge Networks is pleased that the MainStreetXpress ATM architecture has been selected as an important part of this network,'' said Irfan Ali, Vice President, Marketing, Newbridge Networks, Inc. The MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch offers large corporate customers and service providers the high capacity and performance required to build robust broadband backbone networks. The MainStreetXpress 36170 switch is a flexible, modular ATM switch with a highly scalable switching capacity starting at 1.6 Gbit/s and supports frame relay, ATM cell relay, permanent virtual circuit (PVC) and switched virtual circuit (SVC) connections and other ATM-based wide area network (WAN) services. GTE is one of the largest publicly held telecommunications companies in the world. Within the United States, GTE has wireline and wireless operations that form a market area covering about one-third of the country's population. In its wireless operations, GTE provides telecommunications products and services to approximately 3.7 million customers in 73 metropolitan and 52 rural markets nationwide. The Public Communication Networks Group of Siemens AG (Munich, Germany)and Newbridge Networks (Kanata, Canada) formed a networking alliance in 1996 to provide carriers worldwide with the most comprehensive and advanced ATM solution set. With this agreement, the two companies have unified their ATM product lines under the MainStreetXpress brand and assembled the most extensive ATM research and development operation -- 1,500 engineers in five countries. Together, Newbridge Networks, a world leader in ATM, and Siemens, a world leader in central office switching, include among their customers all the world's major telecommunications carriers. Newbridge Networks (www.newbridge.com) designs, manufactures and services a comprehensive family of networking products and systems that delivers the power of multimedia communications to organizations in more than 100 countries throughout the world.
