Maui, a few tidbits from the CC that I don't think I saw in your report, forgive me if I'm repeating. All from Otellini (my comments in parens):
• Chipsets grew faster in Q2 than µPs, always a good sign.
• Japan market is >50% overall notebook mkt. (Hard to believe or did I hear that right? I know space is extremely important to them, but...)
• New Gigabit Ethernet controller chips and NICs now shipping.
• Mobile was very good in Q2. Up more than 10% over Q1.
• Shipping lowest voltage, power X86 mobile chip in the world: 600 MHz PIII, less than 1.0 volt, less than 1/2 watt. (See ya later Transmeta. Hey, that sorta rhymes).
• 0.13 mobile for notebooks shipping now, to be introduced by OEMs in notebooks this month.
• First Foster Xeons shipped: 1.7 GHz
• Mentioned CPQ - INTC alliance where all CPQ's 64 bit servers migrate over to Itanium over the next 3 years or so.
• 2 weeks to shipping 845 chipset, in time for back to school.
(The CC was pretty upbeat. Today, Niles, Cowan, Glavin say they don't believe it, Kumar, PRU, Joseph do. I've listened to many Intel CCs, and they historically "err on the conservative side." Unless they are talking it up because things have been gloomy for a few quarters and they feel like "erring on the plus side", things sound pretty good.)
A lot of "Good Quarter" remarks from the analysts, some putting in the caveat "considering the way the business is out there."
Just remembered, may have been posted, but one of the analysts asked if the capex spending plan for 2002 was done yet. Bryant said Intel had a pretty good idea of what it would be, didn't want to talk about it further at this time, and ask again in October. I recall the same question last July, and the questioner then was also put off until October.
