<<Well, you can sure bet that once I get this squared away, I'm not going to recommend
AOL to anybody. I don't know if Compuserve is any better>>

Compuserve is MUCH better, but it is not flat-rate. Get a flat-rate service like AT&T, IBM GlobalNet, or Earthlink. I ALWAYS get through to Earthlink... AOL is infamous for signing people up, and not letting them cancel. It went on for a year in their early days, with people being billed for months after they called and "quit." Then they continue to inflate their membership numbers. They amortized their advertising over extended periods to pretend they were making money, until the courts stopped them. Then they switched people by default to the new double-priced flat rate scheme, until the states forced them to change their policy. Then they got in trouble for not providing the service. That brings us up to the present. What's next? I can assure you there will be more shady deals from this company. They are sleazy and ought to be shut down, and probably will be eventually. If it were the 1920s they'd be selling Florida swampland as fine homesites.
