TORONTO (Dow Jones)--A major European retailer has selected SAMSys
Technologies Inc. (SMY.T) to supply radio frequency identification (RFID)
readers, SAMSys chairman and chief executive Cliff Horwitz told Dow Jones.
The company, which Horwitz described as a "mini Wal-Mart," will roll the
technology out in "several thousand stores."
The contract "is absolutely enormous," Horwitz said. "What it means for SAMSys
is that it will essentially... establish us as the premiere RFID reader supplier
for these kinds of large-scale deployments."
Horwitz expects details of the deal to be released shortly.
"It should establish us as the gold-standard for (RFID) readers in Europe
because we are the only company which has developed a reader that is fully
compliant with European regulations," he said.
Horwitz said it's difficult to pinpoint exactly how much the deal will be
worth until the purchase order is in, but he expects it to be worth "several
millions."
The development should move the company into profitability, he said.
