So far my screening hasn't turned up many good candidates for a January effect. I'm just not finding many small-cap losers that have gone down a significant extra bit in December as would be indicative of tax-loss selling.

A couple that I considered and dismissed:

OMNI: OMNI Energy Services Corp.
has a severe liquidity problem, a recent financing that failed, and a loan that's due Jan. 15 which is a badly-timed catalyst.

AGT Apollo Gold Corporation (USA)
has a recent equity financing; too much risk of those new shares getting sold.

UAIRQ US Air
In Chap. 11, might liquidate in January

My screens are also turning up some stocks that have been popular with shorts over the past year or two: IMDS BPUR NMGC MED TGLO TIDE. I'd be nervous buying such low-quality issues.
