Lithium ion battery for the new Mitsubishi i-MiEV

Mitsubishi Motors Begins Production of i-MiEV; Targeting 1,400 Units in Fiscal 2009

Second EV to be produced for the general public (Tesla was the first) and first by a major car manufacturer. It's a bit pricey, but prices will come down with economies of scale and further technological improvement. The Prius has been coming down in price around $1K per year since introduction. So at those levels, we could expect the iMiEV to cost $37K by 2019, or $29K after gov't subsidies. It'll be interesting to see what Ford prices their electric car that they are building with Magna (company that is buying Opel from GM). I bet they bring the price in to about $35K, which will make them more competitive than Mitsubishi.

A 200 VAC, 15A full charge takes approximately 7 hours; a 100VAC, 15A full charge takes approximately 14 hours; and a quick 200V 3-phase (50 kW) charge with a quick-charger gun takes approximately 30 minutes for an 80% charge.

The main powertrain components include:

A 300V, 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack manufactured by Lithium Energy Japan, a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors, GS Yuasa and Mitsubishi Corporation. (Earlier post.) The battery comprises 88 lithium-ion cells connected in series.
