ThermaCell Enters $5 Billion in Markets with New Patents for 'Essential Stones' Technology

PR Newswire - March 31, 1999 08:10

SARASOTA, Fla., March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- ThermaCell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: VCLL; VCLLW) announced it has filed three use patents covering industrial-oriented, environment-friendly applications for its recently introduced VaxCell(TM) microsphere cluster technology. The Company also announced it has filed for a trademark for the new technology under the name "Essential Stones".

John Pidorenko, Chairman, President and CEO of ThermaCell, said that the growing number of applications for Essential Stones open up more than $5 billion in new markets to the Company, significantly enhancing the value of its proprietary technology.

When ThermaCell first announced Essential Stones under the predecessor name Aroma Rocks, it was thought the primary use would be for a new way to deliver long-lasting scents for air fresheners and aromatherapy. Since then, the Company has developed a number of new applications, for which it has filed patents, including:

-- Water filters to bind excess salts in the brine discharge for
desalinization plants.
-- Gas filters for reduction of sulfates, phosphates, carbon dioxide and other harmful greenhouse gasses.
-- Liquid/gas separation tools to clean harmful pollutants from steam generated from manufacturing.
-- Water/oil separation tools to clean up oil spills.
-- Replacement for traditional candlewicks which contain lead.
-- Sound abatement insulation to shield engines used in cars, planes, and other heavy machinery.

For each application, Essential Stones can be used to create less expensive, more durable, and thermally stable products, made entirely from glassy materials, compared to conventional solutions, according to Jim Mosbaugh, ThermaCell's Research & Development Manager.

Essential Stones were developed as a byproduct of ThermaCell's stepped up production and R&D of its VaxCell microspheres, a key ingredient in the Company's insulation-enhanced line of paints and coatings. VaxCell microspheres are microscopically small, evacuated spheres of glass. Mixed in paints and coatings, they form a barrier that prevents the exchange of temperature. Fused together to form Essential Stones, the resultant clusters develop capillary-like vents that absorb fragrance oils for aromatic applications or other liquids and gasses for filtration applications. Technical specifications related to Essential Stones will be available on the Company's website at www.thermacell.com.

ThermaCell Technologies, Inc. is a vertically integrated manufacturer and marketer of technologically enhanced coatings and building materials that provide improved insulation, protection, strength, longevity and value at a lower cost than conventional materials. The Company's www.Paint-n-Stuff.com web site is one of the first e-commerce paint stores on the Internet.
