Liberal Math

5.5 - 1 = 0.
9.4 - 1 = 0.
Huh?
What?
What’cha?
Well, folks, that’s the kind of *math* in which the anti-Bush national media now is engaging.
Check out this gem of cognitive dissonance from the left-of-Pravda Associated Press:
<<<
Hurricane Katrina will cause national employment to drop by 400,000 jobs, the Congressional Budget Office predicted. Such a loss would wipe out recent jobs (sic) gains under the Bush administration. >>>
And that’s under the headline: “Katrina Wipes Out Job Gains.”
Really?
Hmm.
Since January 1, 2005, the economy has created 2,293,000 net jobs, of which 1,550,000 have been on W-2 payrolls.
Last I checked, if you subtract 400,000 from 2,293,000, or even from 1,550,000, the result would not be zero. Even using my Casio pocket calculator confirms that to be the case. So, ergo, the Katrina-related job losses – we’re putting aside the fact they’re neither permanent nor established (see below) – certainly would not “wipe out” the economy’s recent job gains.
Not even close.
Now, having said that, we also should mention that the CBO’s forecast is a classic example of trying to “price in,” so to speak, the worst possible outcome in advance. And we also need to discuss the fact that that forecast, even if spot-on, obviously is not implying a permanent loss of jobs. People in this country can and do lose their jobs because of natural disasters but then {gulp} get re-hired later on. You know, after the dust settles and such?! In fact, it’s even possible for someone to lose a job because of a major hurricane but then {gasp} find other employment – even within the same month {oh, the humanity}.
Furthermore, the AP’s little bout of B.D.S. raises the question of what constitutes “recent” job gains for which Katrina could serve as a giant eraser – even if those job losses would be permanent (which they won’t).
Since January 1, 2004, by way of example, the economy has created a grand total of 4,040,000 net jobs, of which 3,744,000 have been on non-farm payrolls.
Even Paul Krugman should be able to figure out that a purely-hypothetical, permanent loss of four hundred *thousand* jobs certainly would not “wipe out” the four-*million*-strong “recent job gains” the economy has posted.
Not even close. Not even horseshoes or hand grenades close. Not even in the same freakin’ ball park as being close.
Sheehan!
In any event, modern-day leftism is not a political ideology.
It’s a mental disorder.
And it appears the Associated Press’ affliction has moved past the Bush Derangement stage and progressed into garden-variety retardation.
Shine on you crazy diamonds . . .
