Catholics Sue Each Other Over Sex Abuse Claims

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A California Roman Catholic diocese has launched a rare legal action against its Boston counterpart over who should pay for the fallout from the clergy sexual abuse scandal.

As the repercussions of the year-old sex abuse crisis inched through the courts, the diocese of San Bernardino, east of Los Angeles, filed a complaint on Tuesday to make the Boston Church responsible for potentially crippling damages stemming from allegations of pedophilia against the Rev. Paul Shanley.

Shanley was transferred from Boston to San Bernardino in 1990 with a recommendation that he was a priest "in good standing." He is currently awaiting trial in Boston on charges of raping four boys in a church rectory there.

It was thought to be the first time that a Roman Catholic diocese had taken legal action against another. "It is certainly very unique," San Bernardino diocesan spokesman Father Howard Lincoln told Reuters on Wednesday...
