The purpose of Intel's acquisitions is to generate a number of start up companies in emerging technologies. These are intended to function as mechanisms to feed Intel's strengths: the ability to implement high technology in Silicon and to manufacture Silicon.

For example a DSP acquisition results in an integrated chip for cell phones (DSP + processor + flash) that may set the standard in the industry.

This is the purpose of the acquisitions, not the purpose of immediate earnings next quarter. You may not like that approach but you can't use short term results to measure a long term strategy.
