Contrasting Approaches to Helping Victims of Katrina

By Mindy Finn
GOP.com Blog

As Americans from across the country aid their neighbors in the Gulf States who were struck by Hurricane Katrina, there appears to be two approaches taking form among our leaders in Washington.

The AP reports that ex-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton (D) "differ in their views over" the government's response to Katrina. "Clinton is pounding the administration's handling of the crisis, calling for an independent commission to investigate delays in aid." She "also wants to see the federal emergency organization overhauled."

Meanwhile,
Giuliani is focused on the now and on finding ways to
strengthen our preparedness for such hard-hitting
disasters. "[S]peaking at an event in Norfolk, Virginia
last night," Giuliani said "it's not helpful to question
decision-makers while the rescue work is ongoing."
He "says the facts don't yet show if the response was
slow, or if any agencies or individuals are at fault."
And on Fox News' Special Report Mort Kondracke lamented,
"This is a dismal pattern in Washington. This blame
pointing, the Democrats have been saying it is all Bush's
fault and it is all Michael Chertoff's fault and Michael
Brown’s fault, and he ought to be fired. The best attitude
towards this whole thing was I think [Senator] Susan Collins
when she said the point is not to fix blame, but to fix
the problems." And in his Roll Call column Kondracke
continued, "Instead of turning the tragedy of Hurricane
Katrina into a new opportunity for partisan finger-
pointing, Congress ought to be working to make sure that
government agencies can handle the next disaster."
