Sure, James, codependency is an interesting subject to discuss. My understanding of it is a little different from yours, as stated in your post, however. I am under the impression that codependency starts in families where there is already an alcohol or drug problem, and that because of the pathologies the person with the addiction problem passes onto the rest of the family members as they form defensive strategies to cope with the unhealthy family unit--such as enabling and/or protecting the ill family member--everyone becomes emotionally ill.

Protecting grown children rather than letting them account for their own actions would seem to be to be simply overprotecting them, for the parents' own neurotic needs.

Perhaps you could clarify what you mean, so that we are in the same place.
