It's a good point. Think about it. A float may be large, right? But if you do the DD and find out that half or more of that float is in very very tight hands(insiders/long term investors/perhaps yourself), you can think of the trading float as the real number.

If the float of XYZW were 10 million and over a period of time, the stock was hammered by the dreaded disease of light volume sell off from say 30 cents down to 5 cents and you knew a big chunk of the shareholders were averaged in at 30 and higher, then you could essentially remove them from the float at those low levels.
