It appears you are speaking now mostly of people caught up in a shifting economy. My thoughts are more in line with watching how people's decisions play out over their adult life.

Focusing on something as simple as general happiness and well being, I find that most people are their own worst enemy.

Start at the top, they dont make any big errors and they dont learn from their mistakes.

1) Having children too soon,

2) Having children with someone you dont want to marry,

3) Spending more money than you make on luxuries, i.e. living beyond your means,

4) Drugs and alcohol problems even as casual users, Drunk driving even if you are not a alcoholic, failing a piss test at work.

5) Not saving for a rainy day,

6) Not reading a book since high school,

The government cant protect people from themselves in all aspects. Now for people caught up in this economy how long are you going to keep them aflot. Suppose there is no shore to land on that they like?

My view may be tarnished from my experiences in the USN where I saw unlimited opportunity for all and many people just did not want to take advantage of them. Further every company I worked for has placed a very high priority on hiring other than white male, even if hopefully they could get qualified.

I see this as the land of opportunity as do all the immigrants coming here.

If you wake up one day in your 40's and you have not read a book since high school and you are out of work, then there is not much the government can do for you. There will be plenty of college age kids willing to take whatever decent job comes along.
