AG freezes assets of school that gave cat an MBA

DALLAS -- The Texas Attorney General's Office has frozen the assets of a self-described university that is being sued by Pennsylvania authorities that claim it sold diplomas. ADVERTISEMENT

Attorney General Greg Abbott said today he had obtained a temporary court order telling Trinity Southern University to stop representing itself as an accredited institution.

Abbott filed a lawsuit that charged Trinity Southern and owners Craig Barton Poe, 35, of Frisco, and Alton Scott Poe, 40, of St. Cloud, Fla., with operating a "diploma mill" that sold bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees for $300 to $500. He called the diplomas "worthless paper."

The lawsuit charged that Trinity Southern granted degrees solely on a student's testimony about skills and experience.

Texas officials said that Trinity Southern was not accredited and violated state education law by offering degrees and using the name "university" in its title. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board referred the case to the attorney general.

The education agency had investigated the school for several months but was unable to find out who was behind the business, an official of the board said last week.

Pennsylvania authorities said they were able to identify the Poes, and that state's attorney general filed a lawsuit last week against the brothers and the school after they paid $398 to get an MBA for a cat named Colby.

Craig Poe has an unlisted number and efforts to reach him were not immediately successful. He did not reply to a message left at his home last week. A phone number for Alton Poe had been disconnected.
