Tom,

Seems like a reasonable survey article. But a couple of caveats:

Articles like this one frequently throw out statements like this:

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) has been shown to be effective against the inflammation of rheumatoid arthritis in a number of studies.

Well this particular claim is one I haven't examined, but I'm prepared to bet that if you research it thoroughly you'd find a much more mixed picture. Some equivocal studies, some unblinded studies that did great, perhaps one or two small double blind studies, etc. Nothing that would make you rush out and buy the stock if this was a patented molecule...

Second, trying to figure out optimal ratios for humans based on animal studies is ludicrous. People aren't rodents.

Third, some of the abstracts quoted here recently make it clear that there are subsets of people that process fats differently. So "one-size-fits-all" advice is inherently flawed. Unfortunately we just don't yet have the understanding to come up with the appropriate diet that matches your own genetic makeup yet.

But we do have something of a confluence of epidemiological studies and our limited understanding of this complex arena. It comes back to the Mediterranean diet, particularly if your genetic background is likely to be somewhat similar to the people from that area. Olive oil, nuts and fish, with only moderate amounts of fat from dairy and meat.
