The particular type of earthquake described in these articles is unlikely to have any direct effects outside of the SAF area.

Up here in the Pacific Southwest -- Vancouver/Victoria down to Portland -- we are overdue for a much much larger subduction quake of at least magnitude 9, which will cause widespread damage in all urban areas plus large tsunamis that will reach all the way across the Pacific to Asia. (It is estimated that 20-25 metre waves will hit large areas of the coast with less than 30 minutes warning.)

Think of the Big One as the equivalent of all the energy from several centuries of Atlantic hurricanes being released in a few minutes. I just hope I have shuffled off this mortal coil -- or retired to a warmer clime -- before it finally happens, because it's going to be by far the worst natural disaster in North America since Canada and the US came into being.
