What does a stock underwriter do?

They sell the stock, keep some, then issue a "buy" recommendation.
They give most of the money to the company......And that's the way it works. When your company goes public......Look for an underwriter that will bad-mouth your stock.....then cover it with a "strong sell". There aren't many underwriters like that around.......I wonder why?
