The thing to do is keep snakes in burrows in your front yard. You may need to supply some heat. When the snakes come out and start slithering all over the ground and acting strangely, then it is time to head for the hills. Snakes can sense microseismic patterns presaging an earthquake two days out apparently. This was observed by Chinese Zookeepers in relation to earthquakes in China.

Of course it's nonsense. There will never be another earthquake in Southern California.
