I am not a fan of Humptey Dumpteyism. What is included in a general idea may be disputable at the margins, but apart from the "fuzzy zone", it is not so hard to tell, for most people. Otherwise, the terms have no meaning at all. Even if it were a subject of dispute whether the Patriot Act were radical or not, that does not mean we cannot pretty easily tell the difference between civility and rudeness, in most instances. Besides, my main point is that if we do not deplore our fellow Americans in the first place, and do not run around saying the sky is falling, we are likely to uphold moderate government.
