One of my mode of earthquake preparedness, given I live in a high risk zone, is to keep alert for my cats behaving more oddly than usual. Household cats and dogs have exhibited the same type of earthquake predictive behaviour up to 30 minutes before a major seismic event.

It used to be thought they were detecting chemicals being emitted by the ground, but now the consensus seems to be they are hearing the subsonic and ultrasonic sounds emitted by the small movements that immediately precede the big one.
