we don't have particularly good answers, unfortunately. A number of smart people agree that the core of the problem lies in the failure of the Arab/Muslim world to make peace with, and thrive in, what would might loosely call modernity. How to help it do that, however, is a puzzle. In the long run, the best and surest way is through economic development. But that requires a number of other, complementary changes that will be resisted, and would be destabilizing before they were stabilizing. So whether it's best to just sit on the problem for the present, or try to force change, or walk away from it all, is anybody's guess. (me, I'm divided between the first two.)
