When I used to work at the big machine shop, a phrase I hated to hear was "Did you get the finger?"

I was working on a large metal turning lathe one week and got one o my dashing curls caught in the 180 rpm rotating head block. When I got up close to look-y at something. This lathe was probably an eight foot with a 1500 pound shaft chucked up. It pulled me within an inch, I'd say, for sure, of the blur of the square head chocks. Within a tenth of a second. Three to five eighths from my left eye. Instead, however, of pounding me into chuck immediately, a chunk of volunteer skin on the top of my head tore off, and I bounced back from the waist.

Then I sat down for a minute. And just let that thing spin. I couldn't even shut it off.

That'll put the fear of large turning lathe blocks in ya.
