Hi Jim, be careful when using historical P/E.

The high/low P/E numbers you listed were based the absolute highest and lowest day of the year and the earnings are the actual earnings that were not known till year end.

For example, the low 1996 P/E of 8.6 is the result of share price of $50 in early early 1996 and earnings of $5.81 released in early early 1997. At the time the share price was $50, people were thinking P/E of 12.4 because 1995 earnings (ie $4.03) had just been released. In fact, current P/E is almost always quoted based on trailing earnings, so if you followed INTC during 1996, you wouldn't have seen it drop below P/E of 12.

The historical figures are useful for comparing year to year but you have to realize how the number was calculated and take that into account. Lastly, Wall Street seems to be assigning a slightly higher P/E to INTC.

Good Luck.

Peter
