Environmentalist challenges rapid growth of grain-based ethanol

DES MOINES, Iowa An agricultural economist contends that the focus on ethanol to reduce reliance on petroleum-based fuels is ill advised.
Lester Brown is the founder of a Washington-based think tank called the Earth Policy Institute.

He says auto manufacturers' focus on flex-fuel vehicles that use corn-based ethanol is the wrong strategy.

He says that's because even with the major push to produce more ethanol, production is still only three percent of the auto fuel use in the nation.

Brown also says that converting massive amounts of grain to ethanol will eventually reduce the resources to be used for food and for feed grains for animals. He says that will spike food prices and hurt the poorest people in the world's developing countries.

Monte Shaw is a spokesman for the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association. He says humans don't eat the type of field corn grown for ethanol. He adds that the by-products of ethanol production are used in animal feed.

Brown is promoting a newly published book, "Plan B Two-point-oh: Rescuing a Planet Under Stress and a Civilization in Trouble."

He suggests that the key to cleaning up the environment and halting the drain on food grain resources is promotion of electric cars.
