Sadly, it seems that the Akaka bill is inching towards passage in the Senate as Senator Akaka has announced that he has reached a compromise with the Department of Justice on certain provisions of the bill. They have reached language to protect the military bases on Hawaii and keep the newly established Native Hawaiian Governing Entity from setting up gambling on the land that they gain from the deal.

However, this bill is still fundamentally a blow to the idea of America has one nation. It endorses the concept of America as a nation made up of different ethnic groups all suffering from victimization syndrome from something that their ancestors endured over a century ago. The solution always seems to be to slice and dice the American populace into different groups. Now, we will establish Native Hawaiians as a separate tribe with separate voting privileges and rights within the state of Hawaii. And it is just a darn shame to see Republicans going along with this bill. My one last remaining hope is that this bill will die in the House and never achieve a final passage, but I don't hold out much hope for that. (Link via The Florida Masochist)
