Political discussions on SI, are often, perhaps usually, not about trying to achieve agreement.

Many of them are even if you drop those that are flame wars or mindless repetition of talking points from consideration.

Once you drop those from consideration, most frequently they are are public debates, aimed at convincing the third parties who are reading. (Not that you are likely to get some dramatic change in opinion, but at the margin opinion can be moved, and even if it couldn't, that doesn't mean that attempting to do so wasn't the main reason for the conversation, only that the attempt would fail).

Sometimes they are mutual examination of ideas and/or attempts to understand each others' position. I've had some interesting conversations along those lines, some of which where about topics I knew from the beginning would not result in any agreement.
