In sports there are four elements. Physical, technical, tactical an psychological. In coaching theory, a key element of the psychological deals with the start of a game. Especially with fifty activity student athletes.

Any who go to coach training at advanced levels will get a detailed discussion.

A prayer is a technique to get all members of the team to focus on a single idea that all are part of a team with a common goal. It's a part of the process of clearing the athletes mind of all the other distractions in their life and bring focus to the game.

In an intimate team question such as a pre game prayer, it's kind of a rule, only the coach and players are involved. No third party can undermine the authority of the coach. In this case any ethical professional coach must walk.
