I really believe that if Obama made a speech like that article (w/o plagiarizing it of course! although since the proponents and opponents of the mosque keep saying the same things over and over and over again, it would be hard to avoid cribbing similar arguments), and even perhaps quoting Washington's famous letter, telling this country and the world what religious freedom means, putting it in the context of the awful wars that had wracked Europe for centuries by that point, and helped to keep it in political chains--if he made a speech like that managing not to offend most of the people who consider themselves religious (it is inevitable that he will offend people like Dobson and Robertson, forget them), use Jefferson's and Madison's speeches on religious freedom and how separation protects both religious and political activity--if he made a speech like that, it would be well received in the broader American population.
