I've been to Ketchikan via the airport on Gravina Island. The ferry service into town was perfectly adequate, so I'm kind of baffled as to how this infamous bridge ever became a spending priority. The ferries are one of the unique and colorful things about Southeast Alaska that make it special.

Don's other big bridge in Anchorage seems more reasonable, but I would rather they just start a ferry across the inlet. BTW, earlier this year a team of wildlife consultants spent several months doing fieldwork for the site suitability analysis for the bridge. One day a young biologist in my neighborhood was counting beluga whales, and left her station briefly to get something out of her car. When she came back she found that a bear had popped out of the woods and was eating her hummus sandwich!
