Deficit threatens Thailand's IMF pledge

The Finance Ministry reported Thursday that the Thai government had a
budget deficit of $700 million in the last three months of 1997. The
deficit threatens government pledges to the International Monetary
Fund to record a budget surplus equal to 1% of gross domestic product
in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30. The surplus is required under the
terms of the IMF-led $17.2 billion rescue program for Thailand
reached in August after the government's flotation of its currency,
the baht, triggered an economic meltdown. (USA Today)
