nolimitz, RE: MSFT and employee options

Yes, the options are for 5 years, but the strike price is set at the day of hire. The lower the strike price, the better for the employee. MSFT's labor costs are rising, and a decent part of that is the fact that they can no longer give a cash portion lower than the competition because MSFT stock valuation has indeed advanced. Whether MSFT is overvalued or not is subject to argument, true. But it is indisputable that MSFT was a better buy when its PE was in the 20's, and MSFT employees know this as well as anyone else.
