Jim, Re: "Who's Kyle? The last word in processors...? I expect unbiased reporting"

I would only expect overclocking enthusiasts on this forum to know Kyle Bennett, but he has a very good reputation for saying things honestly and without a bias. Anand does as well, and he had plenty good to say about the Pentium 4.

anandtech.com

"At 2GHz the Pentium 4 is even more competitive with the Athlon than it has ever been before. If it weren’t for such a large price discrepancy between the two processors then the recommendation would be a tough one to make."

As a reputable reviewer, he has to put things into perspective, and that's why he continues to recommend the Athlon, because of the much lower costs. If cost were not a concern, even your preferred reviewer calls Pentium 4 at 2.0GHz more competitive with the Athlon than it ever was before.

If AMD were to charge as much as Intel for their products, however, they would barely be able to sell close to their recent unit volumes. You can just as easily call their current pricing scheme strategic for their long term as you can a marketing nightmare born from stupidity. They may be coming around now with their "Modelhertz" campaign, but I'll wait and see if that works. But whether it does or not, the best that it can do is allow the Athlon to catch up to the margins that Intel is able to get on the Pentium 4. It still doesn't make the Pentium 4 any less of a compelling processor when it comes to performance. My point was that the Pentium 4 can hold it's own. It is hardly the fraud that Dan3 makes it out to be.
