Cleric Bakri 'begged to be evacuated from Lebanon'

Omar Bakri Mohammed, the controversial Islamic preacher banned from returning to Britain, has begged the Royal Navy to rescue him from Beirut, according to reports in the tabloid press.

The Muslim cleric, who left Britain for Lebanon in August last year, also tried to board a British ship heading out of the region, the Sun newspaper reported.

He is also said to have written to the British embassy asking to be allowed to back on "humanitarian grounds".

However, a spokeswoman for the Foreign Office could not confirm the report, saying: "We are certainly not aware of any contact between him and British officials."

The Sun reported Bakri as saying: "What concerns me now is my safety. My family are very concerned.

"They want to see their father and they aren't being allowed to.

"I'd be happy with just a month's visa but when I turned up this morning they told me couldn't because I'm not a British citizen any more."

Bakri, who founded the now-disbanded radical Islamic group al-Muhajiroun during his 20 years in Britain, was barred from Britain for good by Charles Clarke, the then Home Secretary, days after he left the country.

Mr Clarke took away the preacher's refugee status on the grounds that his presence in Britain was "not conducive to the public good".
