I guess I don't believe in the perpetual growth theory. Video is the biggest hog, but your eye can only resolve so much. We're a ways away from the top end of the MPEG compressed video hierarchy, so if we assume that it becomes commonplace to take 3 simultaneous streams at the highest profile/level some years down the road, that gives us an upper bound (some would say even that is not likely due to minimal visible improvement over slightly lower levels, at much higher cost). That's still under 250 Mbps worst case, so there's still a good chunk of headroom on a GbE link. Now if for some reason it becomes common to transport uncompressed high def video, that's a whole new ballgame. It's not entirely out of the question since high level MPEG encoders are high compute burdens and not cheap, being dedicated hardware. If the processing latency to encode the upper MPEG heirarchy is greater than the allowable latency of what you're sending, you need another (lower latency) way--even if that other way consumes far more bandwidth.

But for sure, bandwidth alone doesn't solve all QoS problems, and a lard-ass pipe without latency controls for latency-critical apps may as well be an anorexic pipe.
