Frankly, I think the name of the game is to keep campaigning so expensive that only millionaires can afford to hold national political office.

I think a lot of versions of reform increase the advantage to millionaires. They make money harder to raise but the Supreme Court has said that candidates have a right to spend as much of their own money as they want. This most recent bill did include something about raising limits if a candidate runs against a person who is using millions of his own money, so at least it tries to counter that problem, but overall I think the reform attempts are a mess, and a major part of the bill, if it is signed in to law or passed over a veto will be found unconstitutional.

Tim, actually I don't have a lot of problem if the politicos spend their own money. M. Cantwell, one of WA's two senators, spent mostly her own money....she started a dot com and made a ton.......but I find that she is one of the few.

Most politicians prefer to spend other peoples' money........and typically millionaires have better excess to the high rollers so that its easier for them to raise campaign money. Plus the wealthy want someone in office who speaks their own language. It feels like a set up.....its rare that someone like Clinton, who comes from a poor background, makes it to the top. That's why I object to the current system.

Otherwise, I agree with you, the whole system is a mess that only seems to get worse.
