teaching math well, especially to older students, is not easy or profitable -- yielding fewer good teachers.

I don't know what is going on at the HS level, it used to be that the math teachers were the coaches. But what I am reading about the college level is not encouraging. Foreign born ESL teachers who put the assignment on the board and can't teach it. I suspect a lot of cronyism in the science departments, with Indians hiring Indians, etc.
