Egypt will maintain peace efforts despite Israeli intransigence
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 12/12/2001

Egyptian Minister Ahmed Maher underlined that Egypt will maintain its efforts for reviving the Middle East peace process despite the Israeli intransigence.

Maher, in statements to MENA before leaving Doha after taking part in the ministerial meetings of the Organisation of Islamic Conference, added that Egypt' s action comes out of its national feeling towards the Palestinians and its confidence in peace, freedom and justice.

Sharon's policy failed to attain peace and security to the Israeli people, said Maher noting that the Israeli premier should change his attitude.

Maher clarified that this was the message he to assert that carried to the Israeli prime minister few days ago violence will lead to nowhere and what is required is adopting a better policy that recognizes the Palestinian people and their rights for reaching peace.

Answering a question on whether peace can be reached while Sharon is in office, Maher said that Egypt does not interfere in the internal affairs of Israel.

Egypt has no right to interfere in choosing the Israeli government, said Maher pointing out that the Israelis should not also interfere in choosing the Palestinian leadership.

Maher returned home Tuesday from Qatar where he attended the meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

In statements following his arrival, Maher said the Doha meetings were good and reflected a common willingness to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and their leadership.

"The conference succeeded to devise a mechanism for serious work to achieve the aims mentioned in the joint statement," Maher said, denying reports- of differences among the conference participants.
