Cray XT4(TM) Supercomputer to Aid Top Japanese Researchers

SEATTLE, WA--(MARKET WIRE)--Oct 10, 2007 -- Global supercomputer leader Cray Inc. (NasdaqGM:CRAY - News) today announced the selection of a Cray XT4 system by Japan's Yokohama City University. The Cray XT4 supercomputer will be housed at the University's Division of Structural Bioinformatics to aid two of Japan's most prominent academic researchers in their efforts to expand on the principle of three-dimensional structures and functions of biomolecules, proteins and nucleic acids.
"The new Cray XT4 system will accelerate analysis of genome function and evolution from protein solid structure information," said Professor Akinori Kidera of Yokohama City University. "Yokohama City University has a proud tradition of science and technology excellence and is fast becoming an international institution of higher education and research. This is a key step for the institution and the field of bioinformatics."

The Cray XT4 system is a massively parallel processor (MPP) system that provides unrivaled sustained performance by balancing performance between powerful processors, memory, interconnect, and IO. Both hardware and software are designed to scale to more than 120,000 processor cores and over one petaflops of peak performance.

"With enhanced performance and improved power efficiency, the Cray XT4 system will give these eminent researchers the computational power to solve even larger and increasingly complex problems," said Mamoru Nakano, president of Cray Japan. "Professor Akinori Kidera and Associate Professor Mitsunori Ikeguchi are two of Japan's foremost academic researchers and we value the opportunity to provide them with top technology to support their ground-breaking research efforts."

The Cray XT4 system for Yokohama City University contains dual-core AMD Opteron™ processors, over 4 teraflops of peak performance and 1.4 terabytes of main memory. Sumisho Computer System Corporation (SCS), a channel partner of Cray Japan, will integrate the system to be installed later this year.
