Are the studios doing it to prevent pirating? Sounds stupid otherwise.

That's what they say anyways. I don't doubt they think that too (remember...these are the same people that thought the VCR would destroy movie theaters).

The bottom line is they will alienate their entire base of early adopters in a failed attempt to prevent piracy (or to enforce a pay-per-play system in the future if you ask a pessimist). Nothing they do will stop the for-profit pirate groups in Asia.

HDCP is reported to already have been cracked and it hasn't even been released yet! The DMCA is the only thing keeping a "converter" box from coming out and those pros in Asia will surely not care about our DMCA.

These guys also want to make it illegal to sell ANY digital device that doesn't have a government backed copy protection built in.
