TP: Overlooked among the Cabinet appointments and the Ashcroft furor is one Elaine Chao, who also goes by the handle of Mrs. Mitch McConnell. Ms. Chao, I would suspect, knows very little about labor issues. Her husband, on the other hand, for years has had a running fight with organized labor in Jefferson County (Louisville), Kentucky. Elaine Chao by herself might be an acceptable choice as labor secretary, but Mrs. Mitch McConnell poses some serious problems for me and 13 million other card-carrying members of the AFL-CIO. Will Mitch be the silent voice behind the secretary of labor? We shall see.
