APPLE vs INTEL Yes, you are right, the comparison should be seperated into 2 categories: 1) MOTOROLA vs INTEL, and 2) APPLE vs MICROSOFT
On the MOTOROLA vs INTEL, I believe there is NO comparison anymore. No only is the INTEL x86 architecture higher in perfromance, but the INTEL processor has a much larger market share, lower price, wider assortment of peripherals, larger nunber of add-in cards, larger installed base, and a larger number of application programs running on it. If you are a customer, would you pay MORE for an APPLE machine which is less flexible, popular,or compatible ?
On APPLE vs MICROSOFT, the same applies, except of course that MICROSOFT is Much LARGER than APPLE as a software provider.
End result, is that the APPLE/POWER PC based machines can only compete if there are more manufacturers and Prices are more competitive to the Intel based PC's. Then, the POWER PC will become more widely accepted. However, this implies that APPLE has more competition(fewer customers), and lower prices(lower gross profit and lower profitability).
I WAS a die hard APPLE fan for years, but I woke up and accepted the fact that the INTEL based PC is a more pupular, cheaper, more felxible, and compatible computer than APPLE. Although I accepted this relutantly, I am now very happy with my Intel based PC. (I use it about 50 hours per week, both desktops and laptops, and find many other customers using INTELs versus APPLES.(In fact I see VERY FEW APPLES).
