Ted - If the Israelis back down or just let Palestinians shoot and bomb them with no response it will only encourage more terrorism. The general strategy of Sharon is the right one. You can argue over specific tactics or targets but if the other side is fighting a war against you, you have to fight back.

Tim, first of all its not a war in the traditional sense of the word but rather a police action on the part of Israel. Secondly, Sharon was elected on a right wing, strong military, pro aggressive treatment of the Palestinian issue. The Israelis had had enough of talking and wanted the Palestinians to be pushed back. It was assumed that Israel as the superior power would have no problem subduing the unrest.

However, its not working........the Palestinians feel they have legitimate grievances and won't go away. Even members of Sharon's party are frustrated and are looking for alternative measures. Its beginning to look like his tactics are not the right ones.

We need to watch the playing out of this scenario very closely. It well could be our future.
