Three Stooges fraudster jailed for four years

A fraudster has been jailed for nearly four years for stealing more than $1 million using a fictional law firm from The Three Stooges.

Patrick Michael Penker used variations of the name of the firm Dewey, Cheetum and Howe to obtain cashier's cheques from banks.

Penker has also been ordered to pay more than $1 million in restitution and forfeit about $900,000 in cash and property to the US government.

He had faced up to 40 years in prison.

Penker pleaded guilty in August to federal charges stemming from his one-man operation that, over several years, conned $1 million (£690,000) from credit card companies and casinos.

A banker at American State Bank in Lubbock, Texas, became suspicious about the firm's name and contacted the FBI. Penker was arrested in March.

He had attempted to place about $900,000 into brokerage houses but was turned away. He then obtained 197 cashier's cheques from banks and 443 money orders from the US Postal Service.
