both of these guys add The REV. in front of their names. That does imply a religious belief.

Second, what is a "professional black?" Is that like a "professional white"? Or is that a racist comment?

It doesn't matter if they are clergy or what their religious beliefs are. There are lots of Christian clergy and Christian believers and very few of them are "professional Christians." There are lots of blacks and very few of them are "professional blacks." A "professional black" is someone who identifies first and foremost as a black and whose life's work is about making an issue out of being black. A "professional white" would be a neo Nazi organizer. The notion of a professional anything is about identity politics.

I'm pretty sure all the "professional Christians" would be on the Christian left. Liberal Christianity* is characterized by being ecumenical, inclusive, pluralistic in contrast with the exclusivism and absolutism of the right. It's hard to imagine liberal Christianity perceiving persecution against Christians in our society. There's enough real persecution of Christians in the world. Perceptions of it in the US are risible.

*To make sure the nuance about religious liberal vs. political liberal is getting across, an obvious example of a liberal Christian is a Unitarian, not a Democrat. A liberal Christian's political views are another matter, possibly related but not necessarily.
