Hello DCF,
<<Now, taking that and walking FORWARD as we need to do, what can we do to erase it and make sure we do not commit the same atrocities??>>
The first thing is to teach our children tolerance. We can do that by making them aware of other people's cultures and repsecting their thoughts and their ways. It certainly isnt done through hatred and isolationism, as that kind of thought creats a breeding ground for the fear and mistrust needed to create those very atrocities.
The other thing that we have to get over is fear. Fear of the unknown, and fear that we are only safe through homogeneity. the best way to overcome that fear is through honest and direct communication that is engaged in with respect for others opinion's. Disagreement, if entered into with respect can be a learning experience that can bond people. Sometimes disagreement can not be overcome, but with respect it remains disagreement. Without repsect, it escalates into something much worse and much more severe.
