Bottom Fishing of a Different kind

Are we at the bottom of the new money barrel yet? They are now going after little old retired ladies for new money for their high risk funds.

Check out this commentary from the bottom of Fiend's Superbear page.

<< Mama Indicator

Last week, equity mutual funds lost $400 million compared to last year's take of $4.9 billion. Although the apparent weakness in inflows (along with rock bottom cash mutual fund cash levels) hasn't hurt stocks, the mutual fund industry is probably starting to get a bit desperate.

Why else would they be trying to shake down my own mother to invest her retirement funds into the market? At her bank (San Wa), a financial "consultant" was showing her how she could double her money in just five years if she followed his recommended investments.

What investment would you recommend to someone who has been retired for the past several years? Here is what her consultant recommended:

Foreign & Colonial Emerging Markets Equity Series
Emerging Growth Series
Managed Sectors Series
International Growth Series
Capital Appreciation Series
World Growth Series
International Growth and Income Series
Research Series
Value Series
Research Growth and Income Series
Conservative Growth Series
Utilities Series
World Asset Allocation Series
World Total Return Series
Total Return Series
World Government Series
High Yield Series
Government Securities Series
Money Market Series
Fixed Account: 1, 3, 5-10 years

Wow, what a selection! Of course the details of these investment vehicles were never provided to my mother but a few of them sound highly risky for someone who has never taken on risk before.

In fact, my mother was very surprised to find out that the investments are not FDIC insured! The consultant of course played down the possibility that she could lose money, but I feel that it is almost criminal how he tried to mislead my mother and lost interest once she began asking a lot of questions.

This "Mama Indicator" is yet another sign of how insane the current mania has become and how it will not be sated until everyone is sucked into it. >>

Unfortunately, it will all end in tears, just like the old market joke, when the bulls try to sell their stock and the broker says " No problem ... To whom? "
