I saw 'The Verdict' last night and Paul Newman's summation reminded me of our conversation here.

It is true, as you suggest, that using deceitful strategies is a constant temptation to children and adults; and as you say there are measures taken everywhere to tamp down the tendency. The latter truth says as much as the former.

The truth of Newman's summative speech is that we want to see the truth win, we want to see justice prevail, and when it does, we celebrate it as a victory over the seemingly insurmountable obstacles presented by social forms and authority.
