The Heterogeneous network scheme only works if you are dealing in 'standardized' (interoperable?) parts.

Under this scenario, the company would have to handle chunks from different suppliers. This means that it would need a decent technical department.

MCI Worldcom's disaster earlier in the year shows that not having a decent technical department and depending on your Prime supplier for assistance has its problems too.
