The "fake" accusation came from the difference between the question that was asked of the developers and what public expectations of such a question were.

Since the question was not published, moreover, since the publicist at Microsoft recommended that the question not be published for fear of a backlash, it is fair to assume that they hid something about the question that would raise questions about the accuracy of the claim.

Hence, 'fake.'
